Why do my Left Parties Keep Collapsing?
Saturday, 17th May 11:30 – 12:40
Even the best organisations on the left can be dysfunctional. Whether it's decisions made in a last-minute panic, or 3-hour-long meetings where everyone falls asleep, the ways we organise ourselves, share information, and make decisions are often a source of problems.
In this session, we'll learn the fundamentals of Cybernetics*. It's the study of systems: a way of looking at any organisation (whether that's a company, a union branch, or all of capitalism) and breaking it down to see how it actually functions on a day-to-day basis. By using this analysis, we can spot where our organisations are going wrong - and bring in better structures and communication to achieve our goals.
Format: We'll explain the basics of Cybernetics and answer everyone's questions. Then we'll break into small groups and apply these ideas to organisations that we're part of - unions, workplaces, campaign groups - to find their strengths, weaknesses, and how we might make them more stable and sustainable.
