Everything is Terrible - Was It Always?

Older people talk to us about how visions of the future have changed during their lifetime. Are we living in an age of pessimism where capitalism has degraded the horizons of possibility in healthcare, housing, and the quest for peace? Or is everything just shit in a different way now, to what it was then?
