Who Gets to Be a Child?
Tuesday, 17th March 18:30 – 20:00
Note that this event is at St Pauls Learning Centre, rather than our usual venue!
Who counts as a child? What does that mean about the way society treats them? The answers given by British social work & legal systems are not consistent. In this event we'll discuss how the state's treatment of children has changed over time, the motivations behind those changes, and how this intersects with children's race and class.
Radical social work is a rich tradition, but too often it is only accessible via academia. In these events we want to bring together those who work in social care, have experience of it, or just have an interest. We'll consider current systems, then ask how social care could be practiced in new, emancipatory, and radical ways.
What to expect
After a short introductory talk, we will discuss the topic in small groups, with some time to feed back to the whole room.
Most of our events have somewhere between 10-30 attendees.
We aim for every event to be accessible to everyone, regardless of any prior knowledge!
