Reclaiming Tech
Saturday, 17th May 11:30 – 12:40
Tech has lost it's way. Promising luxury, convenience and wealth at the tap of an app; the brave new world we got gave us AI slop, block chain snake oil (remember when they said banks would be replaced by pictures of a sad monkey smoking weed!?) mass surveillance, oceans of fake news and alt-right pipelines in your feed.
The digital messiahs asking for our faith abandoned us to build castles in the sky with their hoarded wealth, and locked us out. They have assimilated the power structures they once promised to rebel against and are running amok with no accountability. In DOGE we trust?
Come and join Daniel Watson who will be in conversation with an illustrious panel to put the tech world to rights!
Eran Cohen, Vanessa and Shireen are organisers and educators for the United Tech and Allied Workers (UTAW) branch of the CWU. When they're not shipping code, they're introducing tech workers to the trade union movement in an industry that grew up in Thatcher's society of individualism.
Dr. Marcus Gilroy-Ware was once also a techy, but saw sense and now lectures and researches Law and Ethics in tech and digital media at the School of Oriental and African Studies in West London. Examining digital misinformation networks and reactionary politics he authored the books "The truth about fake news" and "After the fact"
